Abstract

This article aims to analyse the historical path and development of the concept of teaching Portuguese as a foreign language, its results and challenges, based on the proposal for the internationalisation of the Portuguese language proposed by the Ministry of Education and Culture on the issue of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Federative Republic of Brazil in response to the demands of Brazilian embassies and cultural centres around the world for the need to internalise the Brazilian Portuguese language in cooperation with higher educational institutions, based on the economic growth of the Federative Republic of Brazil and more effective integration with the international community, in order to propose a reflection on the new trends and perspectives for the teaching of Portuguese as a foreign language, based on a communicational and intercultural approach to the acquisition of Portuguese language as a foreign language, which seems to us to be more effective in the contemporary world. Another objective proposed here focuses on the in-depth study and results of an approach that places the student in the centre of the language acquisition process - and not just a relatively passive agent in the language learning process. In this way, it will be possible to assertively verify the place that the Portuguese language and Brazil occupy in the contemporary scenario in which languages coexist and societies progress to transform themselves into plural and multilingual environment.
