Abstract

The paper analyzes the strategies aimed at translating invectives, which are one of the spoken language aspects. An invective is considered as a pejorative lexical unit, which, however, performs many functions in a real-life interpersonal communication. The lexicon that provides negative definitions in communication and the issues related to its subtitling and dubbingis of growing interest for the analysis within the aspects of audiovisual translation. The aim of the paper is to identify the basic principles of invectives translation from the German language into Russian and English. The material of the study is represented by “Dark” science fiction TV show and “Skam” drama series; both series were filmed in German and translated into the English and Russian languages by “Kubik v Kube”, “LostFilm”, “NewStudio”, “Netflix” and “GoldTeam” studios. The authors have identified the basic strategies applied by translators, such as calquing, lexical substitution and elimination. In addition, a comparative analysis of their use in the English and Russian languages aimed at defining the prerequisites for the selection of a particular translation strategy has been carried out. The results of the study can be used in methodological guides for translators who work with texts that contain emotive vocabulary and be of great interest to translators involved in audiovisual translation.
